Writing a poem is like
 dropping a rose petal
down the Grand Canyon
and waiting for the echo.

Road Trip America

June 2012. 8000 miles across the northern route from California to Maine, with diversions.

It was an old fashioned sort of road trip. No particular schedule or route. Stopping from time to time to read historic markers, visit information centers, parks, monuments, and those places of interest marked in red on the Rand McNally map. It was cold in Yellowstone, but generally roasting throughout the rest of the trip. We visited friends and family along the way and saw lots of things, but there were people we missed (sorry) and lots of stuff we didn't see, like the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead, Jewell Cave, and the Sacajawea Historical area, not to mention hot springs, rocks, rivers, lookouts, whew. Big Country this. A great self indulgence this trip, but we did drive a hybrid, and found gas cheaper in the Heartland than on either coast (why is that?).
